Brake, the national road safety charity, works to stop death and injury on the roads and to care for families affected by road crashes.
Seven children are killed or seriously injured while walking or cycling in the UK every day, causing untold grief to families, schools and communities. Most children hurt on foot or bike on week days are on the journey to or from school.
Brake understands that one way to reduce these figures is to educate children about road safety. This why, Brake is delighted to have teamed up with Buckle My Shoe to coordinate our fifth consecutive Record Breaking Walking Bus event.
Taking place on Wednesday 11th June 2008, the Walking Bus encourages primary children around the country to simultaneously take part in a short, supervised walk along a safe route close to, or in, their school grounds.
All participating schools receive a road safety teaching pack, worksheets and posters to help them teach children about walking safely on the day of the event and year round. Every child who takes part gets a sticker and a certificate from Brake.
But there’s more to it than that!
We also encourage all schools to use the event as an opportunity to hold lessons and assemblies on road safety on the big day, or during that week. It’s not compulsory, but most schools also use the event to fundraise for Brake’s services supporting families bereaved by road crashes.
This year we are aiming for 100,000 children to take part and hopefully we’ll smash the Guinness World Record for the 5th year running!
